The Peace of Münster

Engelbert Kettler (mentioned on object), 1648

Together two crowned lions pull a chariot of victory. The lion with a sceptre represents Spain; the other one, with a sheaf of arrows, the Dutch Republic. Destroyed weapons lie scattered on the ground under the chariot and the animals. This is an interpretation of the peace concluded between the two countries in Münster in 1648. The Spanish negotiator, Peñaranda, had this medal struck to celebrate this successful outcome.
