Victory Reposing amidst War Trophies

Jacopo de' Barbari (mentioned on object), c. 1498 - c. 1502

Jacopo de’ Barbari was virtually the only Italian Renaissance painter who was also active in the north. He worked at several German courts and eventually even in Flanders and Zeeland. This is one of his 29 known engravings. The fact that he presents the goddess of victory reclining amidst war trophies is highly unusual, as she was generally portrayed in a majestic upright pose.
