Two Vases

workshop of Saracchi, c. 1570 - c. 1585

Various rulers created treasure chambers as a way of displaying their knowledge, wealth, and power. These vases were prominent showpieces in the Kunstkammer in Dresden founded by Augustus, Elector of Saxony, in 1560. In the course of his life he assembled a large collection of around 40 vases, which together were valued at no less than 12,000 thalers (26,000 guilders).
