Two garden vases with the Four Seasons

Jacob Cressant, 1714

These two vases were almost certainly made for the Elsenburg country estate in Maarssen, the property of Amsterdam merchant Theodoor de Leeuw. The classical shape is decorated in several places with asymmetrical ornaments that herald the Rococo style. Examples are the large scrolls above the reliefs representing the seasons.

Description
Op een der reliëfs Ceres, die in de rechterarm een schoof en in de linkerhand een sikkel heeft. Zij ziet naar links om naar twee kinderen, van wie het voorste, een meisje, in de opgestoken hand een takje met vruchten houdt en in de andere een vogeltje op een stokje, waar het jongetje naar grijpt. Rechts van Ceres een knielend meisje met in de ene hand een peer en in de andere een hark. De kinderen dragen over de schouder een sjerp. Keerzijde: Bachus zit naar rechts en ziet naar links om naar een knaapje, dat hem een kelk voorhoudt en om wie hij zijn rechterarm heeft geslagen. Met de linkerhand neemt hij een tros druiven uit een mand, die hem door een meisje wordt aangereikt. Zij ziet om naar een ander knaapje, dat aan een stok over de schouder een dode haas en vogel draagt. Achter hem ligt een hazewind. Bacchus draagt een krans van wijnranken op het hoofd, de mantel bedekt schoot en linkerarmm de rechter jongen heeft een sjerp.
