Two Teapots and an Incense Burner

Pieter Schenk (I), 1702

Schenk the elder took great care to reproduce faithfully the Chinese characters on the bodies of three objects. The text on the teapot in the middle, for example, is the biography of T’ao Ch’ien, a Chinese poet who lived during the Eastern Jin (317-420 CE) and Liu Song (420-479 CE) dynasties. Below it, the incense burner describes the life of Ts’ao-wo, a young girl depicted in other prints from this set.
