Explanatory note

  • Obreens toeschrijving van dit model aan de fabriek van Regout in Maastricht wordt nog door geen enkel bewijsmateriaal gestaafd, noch zijn er vier modellen gevonden zoals in de catalogus beschreven. Het model door P. Schuijt jr. in 1832 gemaakt en werden ter beoordeling door een commissie van constructeurs (P. Schuijt jr., P. Glavimans Jz. en C. Soetermeer.) naar Rotterdam gezonden. De houten en koperen vattingen die in de archiefstukken worden genoemd, ontbreken. Met inachtneming van enkele kleine wijzigingen werd zij goedgekeurd.

Entry

Two glasses for portlights. One (NG-MC-238-1) is rectangular and was intended to be fitted in the planking near the air strake; the smaller square light (NG-MC-238-2) was intended as a sidelight for the planking elsewhere. Both have one frosted side.

Model numbers 236 and 238 as described by Obreen in his catalogue of 18581J.M. Obreen, Catalogus der verzameling modellen van het Departement van Marine, The Hague 1858, nos. 236-238. do not agree with the archival evidence2HNA 2.12.01 Min. Marine, Exh. 28/5/1832 N18. nor with the existing models. Obreen’s attribution of these models to Petrus Regout’s factory in Maastricht is not supported by any evidence so far. Only two, instead of four models as mentioned by Obreen for number 238 have been found.3J.M. Obreen, Catalogus der verzameling modellen van het Departement van Marine, The Hague 1858, no. 238.

These models were ordered by Pieter Schuijt Juniorsz (1797-1885) in 1832 and sent to Rotterdam for inspection by a committee of constructors formed by Schuijt, Pieter Glavimans Jansz (1768-1850) and Cornelis Soetermeer (1782-1842). The brass and wooden frames mentioned in the archives are missing. They were accepted except for some minor alterations.
