Entry

This drawing, inscribed with Berchem’s name in the nineteenth century, corresponds neither in style nor in subject-matter with authentic works by that master. It is instead the work of an early eighteenth-century artist generally following the fashion for Italianate art, at best in the wake of red chalk sketches by Berchem. For the time being, no related composition in drawing, print or painting is known that could help narrow the circle of potential authors.
