Pair of armchairs

Georges Jacob, c. 1787

Georges Jacob was the leading menuisier (maker of chairs and other carved furniture) in Paris in the last quarter of the 18th century. These armchairs are executed in a light, refined interpretation of Neoclassicism. Jacob made several sets of chairs for Queen Marie Antoinette of France, which closely resemble this pair.

  • Description

    Armstoel, verguld en bekleed. De conische poten bestaan uit door ringen gebundelde pijlen. Sierranden op de dorpels en aan drie zijden van het zitraam. De gecanneleerde vaasvormige armleggerstutten rusten op huizen, aan één kant zichtbaar. De armleggers lopen met acanthusblad in het rugraam over; op de uiteinden ondermeer een hondekop. De gecanneleerde rugstijlen zijn versierd. De bovendorpel toont tussen de bovendelen van een flambouw met vlam, vlam, een opengewerkte boog, krans en lint. Zie: BK-16656-a/c.
