Two Chinese figures

anonymous, c. 1748

These porcelain figures were made in Meissen and mounted in Paris on gilt-bronze (ormolu) bases. The design of the bases corresponds with that of the base of the clock with the elephant also on display here. This was a way of creating a cohesive ensemble.

    Figuur van beschilderd porselein. Op een vlak vierkant voetstuk staat een figuur bekend als een 'Malabar' tegen een boomstronk. Het voetstuk is in een vierkant vergulde bronzen voetstuk gevat. De man is gekleed in een geel onderkleed en een groen bovenkleed met randen van bont. Met zijn rechterhand houdt hij een groot op de grond staand schild vast. De linkerhand houdt hij in zijn zij. Op zijn rug draagt hij een koker met pijlen. De figuur is niet gemerkt.
