Teapot in the Shape of a Plum Tree

anonymous, c. 1700 - c. 1799

The body of this teapot imitates the trunk of a plum tree. In Chinese culture, the plum blossom is one of the ‘three friends of winter,’ symbolizing the noble spirit. The highly accomplished potters also transformed the teapot’s knop, handle, and spout into prunus branches.

    Theepot van rood steengoed met een cilindervormig lichaam, gemodelleerd in de vorm van een schijf van een dik stuk bamboe, gebogen tuit en C-vormig oor. Op de wand prunustakken, vogels en een vlinder. Tuit, oor en dekselknop in de vorm van knoestige takken. Yixing.
