Study of Apple Blossom, Dead Nettle, Mayflower, and Ground Ivy

Theo Nieuwenhuis, 1896-05

Nieuwenhuis’ drawn studies of flowers and plants formed the basis of the lithographs used to illustrate articles about Dutch flora. They are purely botanical drawings, but because the artist devoted attention to the contours of the leaves and blossoms they make a marked decorative effect. The contours are even more distinctive because the artist set the plants against a black background.
