’Straßenszene (Street Scene)

Georg Grosz (signed by artist), 1919 - 1920

Around 1920 the Dadaist artist Grosz made a great many works featuring Berlin street scenes. Here city dwellers and architectural fragments are clumped together into a chaotic whole. The people’s faces are unmistakably caricatured. ‘I draw and paint out of protest’, Grosz wrote. ‘With my work I try to convince humanity that the world is ugly, sick and deceitful.
