Urban Development Design for the Boompjes, Rotterdam

Rem Koolhaas (signed by artist), 1982

The Office for Metropolitan Architecture made this study for a ‘window onto the river’ on commission from the city of Rotterdam. Even though the city’s centre, destroyed in the Second World War, had been rebuilt, contact with the river was still missing. Four residential towers and an observation deck were meant to restore this connection. The plan was never carried out, but it did stimulate the construction of high-rise buildings in Rotterdam.
