Longcase clock

anonymous, c. 1690 - c. 1695

This is an early Amsterdam longcase clock. This new type of clock was introduced to the Netherlands from England around 1680. With its long pendulum, its timekeeping is more accurate than other types of clocks.The shape and decoration of the case are based on English clocks. Only the carving displays a recognizable Amsterdam style.

  • Description

    Staande klok belijmd met wortelnotenhout op een eikenhouten kern. De kast heeft een deur met ovale opening door bladrand omgeven en rust op een breder voetstuk op bolpoten. De klokkast heeft geslingerde Corinthische zuilen- en kwartzuilen en is versierd met gestoken blad- en bloemranken. Het opzetstuk bestaat uit opengewerkte acanthusranken, met op de hoeken een adelaar. De wijzerplaat, achter glas en door messing bladranken omgeven, geeft de tijd, datum en maanstand aan en is gemerkt: "Huijgens Amsterdam".
