Satirical Print about Alva’s Statue

An imposing statue of Alva is unveiled in Antwerp in 1571. The statue is subject to fierce ridicule in this print. As a veritable tyrant Alva tramples on Justice, Truth, an Orphan and a Widow. Armies hold sway over the country. But who charges in at the right? Why William of Orange! Meanwhile Beggars (identifiable by their beggars’ bowls) take back their stolen hearts from the base of the statue.

    Spotprent van ca. 1572 op het standbeeld van de hertog van Alva, door hemzelf opgericht op de binnenplaats van de citadel van Antwerpen in 1571. Naast Alva in de lucht de Tijd en de duivel, onder zijn voeten vertreedt hij Weduwe en Wees, Gerechtigheid en Waarheid. Links een groep van geuzen die hun geroofde harten terughalen uit het voetstuk van het beeld. Rechts de personificatie Tiende Penning met Willem van Oranje met zijn troepen. Op de achtergrond een landschap geteisterd door oorlog. In de voorstelling cartouches met opschriften in het Nederlands.
