Slop Bowl from the Service of Clemens August of Bavaria

Meissener Porzellan Manufaktur, 1735

Margarethe and Franz Oppenheimer only bought pieces that were made during the first twenty years of the Meissen porcelain factory. They focused on objects decorated with ‘chinoiserie’ scenes. This term refers to the European fascination with Asia in the decorative arts during the 18th century. The chinoiserie figures on Meissen porcelain are rather stereotypical. They represent a European fantasy that had little to do with the real Asia.

    Spoelkom van beschilderd porselein. De kom is aan de ene kant beschilderd met het wapen van Clemens August I van Beieren, keurvorst en aartsbisschop van Keulen (1700-1761), aan de andere kant met een Höroldt-chinoiserie boven een grote console, waarin een landschap in purper binnen een vierpas is uitgespaard. Twee figuren dragen een doek met daarop de tekst: Clement // August // C.Z.C. // nat. 1700. // D. 16 Augt. De spoelkom is gemerkt.
