The Virgin Mary Spinning with the Christ Child and an Angel

Jacques Bellange (mentioned on object), c. 1602 - c. 1616

While the Christ Child slumbers, an angel attentively holds Mary’s distaff. Her carefully spun thread is easy to follow. According to the Apocrypha, Mary mended priestly vestments already at a young age. Bellange favoured religious themes, and often took an unusual approach. Mary’s elongated body is characteristic of his elegant yet eccentric style.
