Saint Roch

Holthuys, Dries, c. 1500

Saints were often asked for help in times of sickness or disaster. Each saint had his own speciality. Saint Roch was the patron saint of plague victims; here he is pointing to a plague sore on his leg. He became extremely popular in the Lower Rhineland area after the outbreaks of plague of 1493 and 1510.
