St Nicholas Game

Amand, c. 1890

Here the servant of Saint Nicholas appears each time in a different guise. At upper left is a capital letter ‘S’ with a Pete as we know him now: black and wearing a Renaissance-style costume. ‘The servant’ in box 6 has a pale complexion; the one in box 52 seems to be of Mediterranean origin, with a beautiful moustache and goatee. In box 58 a dark, menacing tough-guy puts some miscreants in his sack.
