Screw bottle with Van Duvenvoirde coat of arms

anonymous, 1550 - 1600

If you look closely at objects in a cabinet of curiosities, they often turn out to tell a story. Here, the representations carved in the coconut outline the history of the Prodigal Son, while the related biblical texts are inscribed in the silver mount. The family crest indicates that this artwork was made for a member of the noble Dutch Van Duivenvoorde family. From 1590, they called themselves Van Wassenaar van Duvenvoirde.
