Writing table

David Roentgen, c. 1775 - c. 1780

Under David Roentgen, the family cabinetmaking workshop in Neuwied (Germany) became the most famous in all of Europe. Like his father Abraham, he specialized in mechanically complex furniture; even this simple table is not opened with a key, but by means of a system of hidden buttons. The tabletop has a chinoiserie scene in marquetry.

  • Description

    Schrijftafel versierd met marqueterie van meerdere houtsoorten en verguld brons. Het ovale meubel rust op vier zich naar onderen verjongende poten. De regels vertonen in marqueterie aan knoppen opgehangen draperingen met, aan voor- en achterkant, een kuipbak met touw, katrollen en vlag, waarin de letter R, en aan de zijkanten door een strik verbonden schoppen en ankers. Het blad draagt binnen een rozehouten omraming een voorstelling van een Chinese visser, waarnaast een staande vrouw met parasol en kinderen.
