Writing table

attributed to Jacques Dubois, c. 1745

A table of this format –with a single row of drawers and a leather writing surface –was the preferred writing desk for a gentleman in 18th-century Paris. Its curving form and fanciful mounts are typical of the Rococo style.

  • Description

    Schrijftafel versierd met marqueterie van rozehout op eikenhouten kern en verguld brons. De overhoeks geplaatste S-vormige poten gaan over in de geschulpte regels, aan de voor- en achterkant in drie velden verdeeld en versierd met visgraatmotief. De trekkers, de regels en poten dragen beslag met rocaille-motieven; op de poten ook bloemtakken. Rond het blad, met zwart leer, loopt een verguld bronzen rand met hoekstukken in rocaille-motieven; nog een rand langs de binnenkant der poten en onderkant der regels.
