Writing Box ‘View of Sarusawa Pond’
Funabashi Shūmin, c. 1905
The moon is reflected in Sarusawa Pond in the ancient Imperial capital of Nara. The weeping willow seems to be the protagonist. On the opposite side are the buildings of Kofukuji Temple. Depth is achieved by means of varying degrees of relief in the lacquer. Prince Kuni Kuniyoshi received this writing box as a gift from Emperor Meiji ingratitude for his service in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905.
