Springboard Diver Marjorie Gestring

John Gutmann, 1936

The photographer John Gutmann caught the springboard diver Marjorie Gestring right at the moment when she was briefly suspended motionless in mid-air. Later that year, at the age of 13, she won a golden Olympic medal in Berlin, becoming the youngest gold medallist ever. This photograph is a good example of the experimental idiom that had infiltrated journalistic, documentary, and fashion photography.
