Sketch for a Silver Flower Vase

Mathieu Lauweriks, 1911-09

This black chalk sketch features the side view of a life-size flower vase. The design is executed within a tight horizontal and vertical grid whose dimensions are indicated by a dot. For each consecutive dot an extra square is added, creating a steadily increasing spacing which provides a mathematical basis within which the flowing lines of the vase take shape.
