Boatbuilders, Venice

Frank Brangwyn (Sir) (signed by artist), 1907

Most tourists will never see Venice like this: a cluttered slipway along a backwater canal and decaying houses with a myriad of washing lines. Whether the laundry actually ever dries in these damp surroundings is doubtful. The contrasts of light and shade in this print are exquisite. These chiaroscuro effects led contemporary critics to compare Brangwyn to Rembrandt.
