Explanatory note

  • Deze vlag werd in 1865 door koning Willem III aan het schroefstoomschip van 16 stukken Djambi (Amsterdam 1858-1860, lang 58 m, verkocht in Simonstad in 1874) aangeboden in waardering voor haar aandeel in de forcering van de Straat van Simonoseki, waarbij het schip deel uitmaakte van een internationale strafexpeditie tegen de Prins van Nagato.

Dutch tricolour with gold and black inscription on both sides.

This flag was presented by King William III to the 16-gun screw steamer Djambi (Amsterdam 1858-60, 58 metres long, sold out of service in Simonstown in 1874)2A.J. Vermeulen, De schepen van de Koninklijke Marine en die der gouvernementsmarine 1814-1962, The Hague 1962, p. 56. in appreciation of its role in freeing the passage of the Strait of Shimonoseki in Japan in 1864. Taking part in an international expedition, Djambi helped to break the opposition of the prince of Nagato, Lord of Choshu.
