Chess Pieces

Saar de Swart (mentioned on object), 1923 - 1925

Sculptress Saar de Swart is known primarily as a patron of young Amsterdam artists around 1900. Within her own small oeuvre, these chess pieces constitute a special group. Together with the pawns – not shown here – they form a medieval court. Besides the king and queen, we see two clerics (the bishops), two knights (horses) and two sentries behind a battlement (rooks). The pieces were not actually meant to be used to play a game of chess.
