Santa Maria seen from the Street, Venice

Frank Brangwyn (Sir), 1907

Brangwyn made most of his large etchings on zinc plates. This material is less expensive than the traditionally used copper and, moreover, much softer. The effect of the heavy, deeply bitten lines Brangwyn was after can be achieved more easily with zinc than copper. The design for this print of Santa Maria della Salute is etched on a copper plate: the lines are indeed tauter and thinner than those in Brangwyn’s large etchings on zinc.
