Matthys Cock, c. 1540

According to Karel van Mander, who wrote a short biography of Matthijs and Hieronymus Cock, Matthijs was ‘the first to begin making landscapes in a better manner.’ What he probably meant by this was that Matthijs Cock depicted his landscapes with a consistent perspective and from a high vantage point. Matthijs’ younger brother Hieronymus made a print of the drawing.
