Design for a Decorative Border

anonymous, c. 1500 - c. 1600

This print shows how a vine in an unending circle can lend structure to a design. Among the leaves can be distinguished various birds, men, and women. Depicted at the top and bottom are female coats-ofarms. The same design principle was applied to the guild’s ceremonial chain.
