De evangelist Johannes zit als banneling onder enkele bomen op het eiland Patmos. In zijn linkerhand heeft hij een schrijfveer en onder zijn rechterhand ligt het boek Openbaring. Naast hem zit een adelaar als symbool van zijn inspiratie. Achter hem is het visioen van Maria met het Christuskind te zien. Onder de voorstelling een tweeregelige, Latijnse tekst.
