Hospital farewell party in Nagasaki

anonymous, 1867

Antoon Bauduin’s predecessors in Japan, J.K. de Wit and J. Pompe van Meerdervoort, taught photography as part of their duties. This was not required of Bauduin, so he took photographs purely for his own enjoyment. He further pared down his teaching duties by focusing solely on medicine and leaving the chemistry and physics instruction to colleagues.
