Quo vadis?

attributed to Frank Meadow Sutcliffe, 1871 - 1925

Photographers wishing to lend their profession artistic standing could do so in various ways. Choosing subjects and poses derived from painting and sculpture was one option, soft focus was another. Sutcliffe gave this atmospheric landscape photograph a suggestive, symbolic title Quo vadis? (Where are you going?). It doubtless refers to the then popular novel Henryk Sienkiewicz published in 1895.
