Portraits of Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex, and George Villiers, Duke of Buckingham

Pieter van Gunst (mentioned on object), c. 1698

These portraits come from a richly illustrated book on the history of England, Scotland, and Ireland published in Rotterdam around 1700. However, a presumably 18th-century owner cut them out of the book, pasted them onto mounts, and provided them with a grey border. The portraits were then also coloured in. Probably to hang them up as small paintings afterwards.
