Portrait of Mrs Wilhelmina
Frederika Henriëtte Broeksmit (signed by artist), 1885 - 1931
In making this portrait of her mother, Frederika Broeksmit was clearly inspired by Rembrandt’s prints. Following in the footsteps of her 17th- century model, who portrayed his mother in print on several occasions, Broeksmit used a sketchy style of drawing and emphasized contrasts of light and dark. The smudges from the scratched copper plate lend the print an experimental character.
