Portret van een jongen

Helen Levitt, c. 1942

In the 1940s, the American photographer Helen Levitt began to primarily photograph New York City street life, with children in the leading role. She captured them playing in the street and – when wandering about – lost in their own world. Levitt also made powerful portraits, such as this one of a hooded boy, who looks at the photographer and us, the viewers, with a penetrating gaze.
