Portrait of the Young Cosimo III de’ Medici

Pietro Anichini (mentioned on object), 1655

This endearing portrait features the thirteen-year-old Cosimo III de’ Medici, who would become Grand Duke of Tuscany in 1670. The Florentine engraver Pietro Anichini executed it according to his own design. The young Cosimo would have posed for him. In the Latin inscription, Anichini addresses Cosimo’s father and praises the boy’s physiognomy as exemplifying the virtues of the reigning Grand Duke of Tuscany.
