Portrait of Toon Verhoef

Lou Loeber (signed by artist), in or before 1925

Lou Loeber met the painter and writer Toon Verhoef at the end of 1919 through her friend Elly Tamminga. With his vision of socialist art, he exerted great influence on her artistic development and ideas about art. Inspired by Mondriaan, among others, Loeber had already tentatively begun to stylize her subjects. Her acquaintance with Verhoef convinced her that she was on the right path.
