In addition to numerous opulent society portraits, Thérèse Schwartze’s oeuvre boasts many intimate likenesses of close family members and friends. Her beloved favourite, cultured cousins Lizzy and Thérèsia Ansingh often visited the artist’s home and regularly posed for their aunt. Decked out in a wide-brimmed hat and lustrous satin dressing gown, Thérèsia, nicknamed Sorella, here leans casually on the back of a chair.
