Portrait of Hendrick de Hartog

Adriaan de Lelie, 1790

Hendrick de Hartog taught mathematics at the Felix Meritis Society on Monday evenings. He had this portrait made when the Dutch East India Company (VOC) appointed him a navigation examiner. On the table are a telescope and a sextant. De Hartog had devised a new, viable arithmetic method for calculating lunar distance while at sea.

    Portret van Hendrick de Hartog, examinator stuurlieden voor de VOC en de Raad van de Aziatische bezittingen, lector wiskunde en zeevaartkunde aan het Atheneum Illustre te Amsterdam en lid van Felix Meritis. Zittend, ten halven lijve aan een tafel, een papier met een geometrische tekening in de linkerhand. Op tafel staan een sextant en een telescoop.
