Portrait of Friedrich August Hoffmann Christiaan Andriessen (1775-1846)

Christiaan Andriessen (signed by artist), 1807 - 1808

The sitter was a German pupil of Jurriaan Andriessen, Christiaan’s father. He is here portrayed in a casual pose, smoking a pipe. Hoffman’s name is written in code at the bottom of the sheet. Andriessen used code so often that it must have been intended to conceal information from outsiders, or create a sense of secrecy.
