Hendrick Goltzius (mentioned on object), 1591 - 1592

The skin-like surround (cartouche) of the inscription below the portrait has auricular forms along its lower edge. This was probably their earliest appearance in the Netherlands. Adam and Paulus van Vianen, the silversmiths from Utrecht, knew Goltzius well.

    Portret in ovaal van de humanist en kunstenaar Dirck Volckertsz. Coornhert (1522-1590), met ornamentomlijsting (van aparte plaat gedrukt). Opschrift in het Nederlands en onderschrift in het Latijn in de ornamentomlijsting. Randschrift in het Latijn rond het portret, waarin melding gemaakt wordt van Coornherts geboorte- en sterfjaren, en van het feit dat Goltzius hem naar het leven heeft afgebeeld.
