The French diplomat, soldier, and spy Chevalier(ère) d’Éon (1728–1810) lived 50 years as a man and then 30 years as a woman, becoming a celebrity at the time. In this portrait, d’Éon presents as a woman and supporter of the French revolution, including a cockade on her hat. D’Éon is one of the few historical figures known to have lived beyond traditional gender boundaries.

Dit portret is gemaakt door de Franse schilder Jean Laurent Mosnier(1743) van Chevalier(e) d'Eon (1728-1810). Deze persoon is geboren in Frankrijk in en leefde de eerste deel van diens leven als man. In dienst van koning Lodewijk XVI maakte hij carrière, onder andere als diplomaat en spion. In 1762 werd hij uitgezonden naar Londen. Vanaf de jaren '70 nam zij het uiterlijk van een vrouw aan en vanaf 1777 claimde ze een vrouw te zijn. Dit hield ze vol tot aan haar dood, waarna bleek dat ze biologisch gezien mannelijke kenmerken had. Het portret werd in de Royal Academy in 1791 tentoongesteld, waar het de titel kreeg: Portrait of Mademoiselle d'Eon. Ook na haar dood bleef men speculeren wie zij was en waarom ze van geslacht was veranderd. Verschillende redenen op verschillende momenten werden aangedragen. Eonisme zou een van de eerste namen voor transgenders zijn, vernoemd naar de Chevalier(e). Naar aanleiding van dit portret is een kopie gemaakt door Thomas Stewart in 1792, dat in de collectie van de National Portrait Gallery is (NPG 6937).
