Portrait of Charles William Lambton

George Henry Phillips (mentioned on object), 1839

Lawrence painted this portrait of the seven-year-old Charles William Lambton in 1825. He situated the boy in an unusual setting: a nocturnal, moonlit rocky coastal landscape. In the characteristic pose of a melancholic, his head propped against his hand, the boy stares out dreamily, as a would-be poet. Charles William died of tuberculosis at the age of thirteen.
