workshop of Peter Paul Rubens, c. 1628

School of Peter Paul Rubens (1577 - 1640). Portrait of Anne of Austria, c. 1622. Every detail of this portrait of Anne of Austria radiates power and importance. The woman is wearing a richly decorated gown embroidered in gold. She is laden with jewels and is seated in front of a red drapery, with a Corinthian column in the background. Anne (1601 - 1666) was the daughter of the Spanish king Philip III. At the age of 14 she married the son of the French king. Their son, who was born in 1638, became the 'Sun King', Louis XIV. The Rubens atelier did several different versions of this portrait. Bequest of A. van der Hoop, 1854. On loan from the city of Amsterdam, 1885.
