Pembrontak (Revolutionaries)

Otto Djaya, 1946 - 1947

Three Indonesian freedom fighters stand ready to defend Indonesian independence, declared on 17 August 1945, by force of arms. In 1947, the painter Otto Djaya travelled as cultural envoy of the Republic of Indonesia to the Netherlands, which was fighting a colonial war directed against Indonesia in the same year. Surprisingly, also in 1947, this painting hung in the exhibition Two Indonesian Painters at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
