Pope Innocent XI Receiving the Embassy of the King of Siam

Johann Christoph Boecklin (mentioned on object), 1688 - 1709

Because Narai did not convert to Catholicism, Louis XIV refused to receive the diplomatic mission of Siam in 1688. He sent them to the Pope, in Rome, where they were welcomed on 23 December 1688. After Narai’s death that year, his councillor Phetracha began an uprising against the Europeans. In 1690, all Europeans except the Dutch were expelled from Siam. This put an end to the Franco-Siamese relationship that had begun in 1680.
