Couples in the Countryside around Zwolle

Gesina ter Borch, c. 1660 - c. 1669

With just a few small details, Ter Borch suggested the atmospheric conditions in which these amorous couples out for a stroll find themselves. The rainbow is a sign of fickle weather. There is also a stiff breeze blowing in from the left, evidenced by the kite in the background and the windswept hair of the woman in the foreground. None of Ter Borch’s albums contains a watercolour based on this composition.
