Pair of candelabra
anonymous, c. 1780 - c. 1800
The veiled female figures are vestal virgins, who were priestesses from Roman antiquity. In France these kinds of candelabra were made of gilded and patinated bronze, while in the Netherlands they were imitated in gilded and black painted wood.
