Pair of candelabra

anonymous, c. 1780 - c. 1800

The veiled female figures are vestal virgins, who were priestesses from Roman antiquity. In France these kinds of candelabra were made of gilded and patinated bronze, while in the Netherlands they were imitated in gilded and black painted wood.

    Een houten, staande vrouwenfiguur op vierkante plint. Zij draagt een drielichtskandelaber, die opkomt uit een vaas op vierkante plint. De armen van de kandelaber zijn in de vorm van eiketakken gemaakt. De bobèche is los. De vrouw is zwart geschilderd en de rest is verguld. De patélaag is op sommige plaatsen, vooral bij de kaarsenhouders beschadigd.
